About the practice

Our history

Piedmont was formed in late 2008 during the real estate downturn to diversify a land development company’s services and serve public- and private-sector clients. We have grown from two to seven employees, maintaining a team size that allows us to provide personal service to our clients.

Our mission

Piedmont’s mission is to support our clients’ success through timely, cost-effective, personal service and quality design and approval processing for land development projects. We work efficiently using the latest technology and value the trust our clients place in us. We treat everyone with professional courtesy, dignity and respect, regardless of their role or point of view. Building strong, diplomatic relationships with our clients, reviewing agencies and other project stakeholders is central to our work.

Our leadership

Piedmont’s principals are Ed Wormald, P.E., and Mike Wiley, P.E., Prof. L.S. With a staff of seven employees, Piedmont is licensed to practice engineering and land surveying in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Through our affiliates, we also provide landscape architecture and forest resource services in Maryland. We handle projects ranging from single-lot developments to complex mixed-use developments with more than 1,000 units.

Our experience

Land development requires experienced professionals who can plan, design and guide projects through the regulatory approval process. We understand the need for timely attention and the importance of a project’s financial success to our clients’ business goals. Our team of licensed professional engineers, surveyors and general contractors brings more than 140 years of hands-on experience in planning, surveying, engineering and construction for residential, office and commercial development.

We begin by understanding each client’s project requirements, schedule and financial goals. As members of the project team, we prepare comprehensive task lists, schedules and budgets, provide regular updates and hold progress meetings. We also refer clients to other industry specialists and include legal, traffic and environmental consultants as needed.

We use Microsoft Office, AutoCAD Civil 3D and other industry-standard project management and design software to produce accurate, technically complete work. Our experience across Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania has helped us build relationships with agency and government representatives and develop local knowledge of approval processes. We also participate in relevant industry organizations to maintain our technical and business knowledge and represent the land development industry’s interests.
